US Energy Consumption per Capita By State

· Mohammad-Ali Bandzar

This was an interactive visualization of the amount of energy used per capita (per person) in each state of the United States.

Description

The visualization showed a color-coded map where each state was colored based on its energy consumption per capita. Alaska appears surprisingly dark red in the graph because although its total energy consumption is relatively low, when divided by the population of Alaska it ends up disproportionately high.

This disparity is due to several factors, with some of the largest being:

  • The oil industry in the state
  • The fact that Alaska still uses very inefficient diesel generators to power most of the state’s grid
